The present study evaluates synchronous generator's out of step main protection schemes from transient stability simulations of an electric power system. The main concepts and equations of power system stability, modeling of out of step protection schemes and system components and the differential equations resolution method are presented.
To perform the simulations, a MATLAB application was developed, which returns the graphics of the main generator variables of interest (angle, voltage, current, power, etc.) and also the protection schemes response according to the equipment system components, simulation parameters and the faults applied to the system.
From analysis of the simulation cases, one can conclude that the out of step protection schemes presented are effective and respond correctly, removing the generator from the system in cases of transient instability.
