This work presents a basic study on the Cascaded Brushless Doubly Fed Induction Machine (CBDFM), which is composed of the cascaded connection of two wound rotor induction machines. The working principle of this machine is introduced, highlighting its characteristics, advantages and disadvantages. Moreover, application areas are proposed. The historic evolution of the CBDFM is also adressed in this work. Digital simulations of the CBDFM working as a motor for different cases are shown. The active power flow in both machines is analysed by means of simulation. The modeling is described showing the mathematical equations used in the control system for the case in which the CBDFM is proposed as a wind power generator. The field oriented control strategy and the use of power electronic converters are emphasized with simulation results. The validation of the proposed control strategy was done through simulation using the electromagnetic transitory software PSCAD/EMTDCTM.
