This work presents a study of the power quality of a commercial building, and consists of measurements, simulations, analysis and critical load investigations.
There is a special interest upon applying shunt power active filters based on the Instantaneous Power Theory. The shunt active filters have local action over nonlinear loads and, due to its characteristics, can perform power factor correction as well as achieve sinusoidal current on the sources. Besides that, shunt active filters reduce total harmonic distortion on the voltage at the point of common coupling.
A financial analysis is made in which, classical approaches, based on passive power filters and capacitor bank, are compared with active power filter solutions.
